CUSTOM FURNITURE ITEMS
CLIENT MIKE EGAN
During the first trimester of my interior design course, I was required to design and develop custom furniture for our client Mike. It needed to suit the décor and overall interior of the space. The two custom pieces were a bookshelf and rug.
CUSTOM BOOKCASE
During Ideation and conceptualisation, I found myself exploring rectangular shapes, using this design process as a starting point for my concept design. I found many ideas were coming from more rectilinear shapes and styles. I wanted to see the connection between understanding negative and positive space within these sketches. These allowed me to develop my idea further.
I started to use those abstract sketches to further Ideate my bookcase design. Exploring the early stages of bookcase development. I wanted to draw them as small thumbnails to get many possible ideas.
I further developed this idea by drawing some perspective drawings to understand the bookcase and it would look roughly to scale and in real life. By rendering them I also was able to narrow the colour and material selections.

FINAL BOOKCASE DESIGN
The final product is based on the client's requirements of varying heights as well as complying with the modern mid-century modern theme.

CUSTOM RUG
The main driving factor of the rug design was from Egan's interest in rare books. I wanted to explore further the concept of book spines; vintage books, art covers as well graphic design layouts of pages. Upon this research, I wanted to view and explore this notion in an abstract form. Once I started to view my inspiration images, I started to create patterns, dominance of line and focal points to see what would be best adapted into a rug.
I found the patterns and linework in the abstraction phase useful and thus wanted to explore the idea with Copic pens that would allow me to add colour and to create a layered effect. I, however, found it hard to convey different textural elements of the rug, which was my original idea, adapting and creating whittled paper from old books.

FINAL RUG & DIMENSIONS
Upon the final design, general dimensions and material selection was required for the project.
